Uncovering What's Just Beyond the Horizon

October 07, 2019 | by Milesh Gogad, CMO, GE Aviation’s Digital Group
Disruption is all around us. From communication to commutes, music to money transfers and travel experiences to space exploration. Digital technologies are transforming how we live, work and play. But what’s core to this transformation? It is data! Data that you can trust. Data that delivers compelling outcomes, memorable experiences and fosters innovation.

Forrester Research identified four rules that digital innovators follow to rewrite businesses1). No industry is immune to disruption and GE Aviation’s Digital Group is at the forefront of digital innovation to ensure our customers stay ahead of the game. Here are just a few examples of how we do it:

• Digital experiences: Airlines find it difficult to engage a distributed pilot workforce that is increasingly millennials who learn and train differently. The industry needs over 550,000 new pilots by 2030. Qantas and GE partnered to develop an app called FlightPulse that empowers pilots to take operational decisions based on data and improve the flying experience. About 2,700 Qantas pilots used the app to reduce 5.71 million kg in carbon emissions and improve adoption of fuel-saving practices by 15%

• Digital operations: Despite being a vanguard of innovation in physics, engineering and material science, the commercial aviation industry realized operational inefficiencies to the tune of $ 74 billion2) in 2018. Frost and Sullivan estimates utilizing data and analytics could have avoided $ 25 billion of this waste. Through our apps for flight operations, technical operations and network operations, we are helping airlines like AirAsia fulfill its mission to enable everyone to fly by reducing its fuel cost up to 1% and Emirates decrease maintenance costs by reducing its unscheduled engine removals by 56%

• Digital ecosystems: Just like social networks and retail marketplaces, we believe data is more valuable when the right users have access to it. That’s why over 450 customers trust us with 46,000+ years of flight data. They rely on our flight data platform, Event Measurement System (EMS) to share data from more than 15,000 aircraft and helicopters. And our partnerships with Teradata and Microsoft help us discover even more valuable insights by combining our operations data with commercial, financial and passenger data in a secure, scalable way

• Digital innovation: We understand how frustrating it is when videos buffer or calls drop. That should not be the case while flying either. Along with our partners, we are developing innovative connectivity solutions right at the intersection of flying experiences and flight operations. But we don’t stop just at ubiquitous connectivity. Through Digital Works, we accelerate the industry’s digital transformation journey from ideation to adoption. After all technology is only as good as the people who use it

We acknowledge the most powerful insights are not always in plain sight. We help reveal them through purposeful connections. When passionate aviation nerds labor toward a common goal, an industry is transformed. Partnership with customers is paramount to success. With our customers’ data and our combined domain experience, we make machines, networks, and people exponentially more productive.

The aviation industry lives and breathes technology and so do we. Data speaks to us differently as we overlay it with a century of aviation expertise to see what others miss. Guided by a common goal, we work to join data with our understanding of in-flight realities. Small discoveries lead to big insights that create great impact. Together, we uncover what’s just beyond the horizon.
