ATLANTA – March 10, 2026 – GE Aerospace (NYSE:GE) announced today the continuation of its global research collaboration with Airbus Helicopters aimed at developing a revolutionary next-generation helicopter propulsion system. Initiated in 2024, the effort represents a significant advancement in the partnership between the two industry leaders, with the shared goal of developing an engine that sets new standards in efficiency, reliability, and environmental responsibility.
This next stage of research will focus on advancing detailed engine design concepts and evaluating component-level efficiencies, building on early findings to further mature a propulsion architecture capable of meeting future operational and sustainability requirements.
“GE Aerospace is excited to enter this next phase with Airbus Helicopters to advance the technologies and design approaches that can shape the future of helicopter propulsion,” said Elissa Lee, executive director of commercial turboshaft engines at GE Aerospace. “Together, we are focused on understanding what it will take to deliver meaningful sustainability and efficiency gains, while continuing to meet the demanding mission needs of our helicopter operators.”
The first stage of the collaboration was centered on foundational research, and the continuation of the study will explore opportunities to significantly reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions while maintaining the performance, durability, and reliability demanded by next-generation rotorcraft.
Leveraging its proprietary lean operating model, FLIGHT DECK, GE Aerospace is accelerating work on next-generation propulsion technologies, including high-performance turboshaft engines and more sustainable architectures, helping move research into practical designs that can be built, tested, and fielded to meet real-world customer needs.
