The magnitude of manufacturing in the GEnx
It takes more than a village to build a jet engine. In fact, it takes six countries, 12 states and 21 GE manufacturing sites providing 1.1 million total parts to form one GEnx jet engine. With more than 1,600 GEnx-1B engines sold worldwide, that means 1.76 billion parts come together to form the fastest-selling, high-thrust jet engine in GE Aviation history.
Testing FATE: US Army and GE Aviation begin testing the first full Future Affordable Turbine Engine
GE Aviation successfully began testing the first full engine in the Future Affordable Turbine Engine (FATE) program under a cooperative agreement between GE and the US Army. The engine is designed to meet a series of aggressive goals including a 35% reduction in specific fuel consumption, 80% improvement in power-to-weight, 20% improvement in design life and 45% reduction in production and maintenance costs relative to currently fielded engines.
Blast from the past: GE’s original engine test cell continues to contribute in a key way
Aviation’s mach 1 oxidation facility in Lynn, Massachusetts is a unique and significant operation that still utilizes the original test cell that validated America’s first jet engine (the GE 1-A, circa 1940) to help determine what coatings and alloys are best suited for today’s engine parts.
