The GE9X engine has emerged as GE Aerospace’s most advanced commercial engine to date. As the largest and most powerful certified commercial aircraft engine, the GE9X incorporates advanced technologies that enable more efficient, quieter flight with fewer emissions than earlier engines.

Strengthening connections with key aviation players, GE Aerospace joined exhibitors from 95 countries at the Dubai Airshow, announcing significant orders for both widebody and narrowbody engines. Here are the GE Aerospace headlines and news from the 2023 Dubai Airshow.

Air India announced on February 14 that it is buying 400 single-aisle and 70 twin-aisle commercial aircraft. To power the larger airliners — Boeing 787 and 777X twin-engine jets — the carrier signed an agreement with GE Aerospace for 40 GEnx-1B and 20 GE9X engines, plus engine services. Air India will also buy more than 800 LEAP engines from CFM International, a 50-50 joint company between GE and Safran Aircraft Engines, to outfit the smaller planes in the order, 210 Airbus A320/A321neo aircraft and 190 Boeing 737 MAX-family aircraft.

At the Dubai Airshow this week, one of the most anticipated sights will be the Boeing 777X, Boeing’s new plane powered by the GE9X, the most powerful jet engine in the world. But thrust is just one of the engine’s many attributes. It’s also tough and the United Arab Emirates, a hot, desert country that also happens to be the base for two of the world’s largest airlines — Emirates and Etihad Airways — is an ideal place to talk about the engine’s brawn.

To celebrate the GE9X engine certification, Steve Ross can add another accomplishment to his unique 37-year GE Aviation career—working back-to-back from start to finish on the two newest widebody engine development programs.

GE Aviation has successfully completed one-third of the 25 major test campaigns required for certification of the GE9X, and is on track to certify the engine next year. GE9X, the largest commercial engine in aviation history, will power Boeing’s new 777X aircraft.

Final assembly is well underway on the first full GE9X engine that will test in the first half of 2016, four years before the GE9X engine enters service on a Boeing 777X aircraft.
