Nearly 20 years ago, GE Aerospace lost out in a competition to power part of LATAM Airlines’ passenger air fleet. But what goes around sometimes eventually does come around. Case in point: This month, LATAM announced it is ordering five additional Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, all of which it plans to switch from competitor engines to GEnx-1B engines, making Chile-based LATAM the first airline in Latin America to utilize the GEnx.

The GEnx engine family has surpassed the 50 million flight hour mark in less than 12 years, the fastest rate ever for a commercial widebody engine.

Last weekend, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines passengers took special flights to Edmonton and Porto, even if they didn't know it was part of The Sustainable Flight Challenge. The flights were powered by GEnx and CF34 engines using a mix of approved Sustainable Aviation Fuel.

As it reaches its 10-year revenue service anniversary, the GEnx engine recently achieved outstanding endurance test results, completing over 3,000 cycles of dust ingestion testing.

Atlas Air Worldwide has signed an agreement with GE Aviation to purchase GEnx-2B engines for its four Boeing 747-8 Freighters. Airlines and other GE customers have ordered more than 2,500 GEnx engines since they entered service early in the last decade, making it the fastest-selling, high-thrust engine in GE’s history.
