A unique collaboration between GE Aviation and Boston University aims to generate digital and manufacturing solutions for GE while exposing college students to real-world technology and industry experience.

At GE Aviation, we monitor more than 30,000 commercial engines daily. How much data do we collect? Our engines produce data snapshots at various points in flight, such as take-off, climb and cruise. The snapshots include up to 1,000 different measurement parameters, and each engine can pump out between 50 to 200 megabytes of data per flight depending on the flight time. This gives us a massive amount of data.

GE Aviation has never experienced anything like the LEAP production ramp, which will see the Business grow from producing 500 LEAP engines in 2017 to some 2,200 engines per year in 2020 and beyond. To handle the ramp in LEAP production, GE has added more than 1.5 million square-feet of new production and Services footprint, which includes eight new facilities and additions to 10 existing plants.

The end users of GE Aviation's products have a unique job. They are serving in their country’s military to protect its citizens. As the number of threats in the world increase, pilots need to fly farther while carrying more cargo and using less fuel. The engines they use need to be reliable and easy to maintain. It sounds like a tall order, but GE has a long history of providing our warfighters with the capability they need!

Certification testing is underway on GE Aviation’s latest engine in development—the GE9X that will power Boeing’s 777X aircraft. Combine the technologies of the GE9X engine and you have an engine that will be 5% better in fuel efficiency versus any engine in its class. With almost 700 engines on order, the GE9X engine has quickly gained a following among airline customers around the world. For the GE Aviation team, we can’t wait to see the first GE9X engine tucked under wing of our flying testbed later this year.

GE Aviation has pioneered a mutually beneficial arrangement with the U.S. Government to accommodate the environmentally controlled teardown of hardware and recovery of strategic alloys in exchange for credits on future engine/parts purchases.
